Sydney Wreck Dives
6_gallery_Dsc02075.jpgSydney has quite a few deep water wrecks at the depth of 45-50 metres. One of those wrecks is the Coolooli a popular wreck with Sydney Divers. And the Valiant one of the few shallower wrecks at 26 metres. The visability on these wrecks are usually 5 to 10 metres and sometimes in winter when the winds are blowing offshore it has been reported as being 30 metres.

Coolooli
The Coolooli is a bucket dredge and was one of 10 ships skuttled off Long Reef in 1980 to form an artificial reef. The wreck is easily penetrated but I recommend you don't on your first dive and only if your experienced with deep water wrecks. The Coolooli is an amazing dive during the day and I have dived it at night which was quite errie. The wreck lies on its side in the sand and the buckets are clearly visible.

The Valiant
The Valiant was a tug boat which once operated in Melbourne, and in 1981 was purchased by a Sydney Operator. The vessel failed to gain survey from the Maritime Services Board and could not be used commercially. The operators decided to scrap her and during this operation the hull became damaged from explosive charges in an attempt to remove the prop. Taking water it was then decided to scuttle her and as she was towed from Pittwater out to sea she was swamped by a large wave breaking the towline and sank in 26 metres of water. Thus becoming one of Sydney's newer and more accessable wreck sites.

Wreck of the ValiantThe Valiant is a popular wreck in Sydney being intact and a bit more assessable then the deeper 47 metre wrecks such as the Coolooli. The Valiant has an abundance of sealife living and attached to it and the sponges are quite colorful and you should always do this dive with a torch to bring out the colors. The wreck can be penetrated only by swimming through the wheelhouse from one side to the other where you can stop and see into the wreck and the abundance of fish.

Pictured top is the Valiant lying tilted in the sand, looking at the bow end. And in the animation above right.
